Frequently Asked Questions

I work individually with adult women and especially enjoy doing psychotherapy with professional women in mid and later life. I am drawn in particular to working with women with careers in healthcare, and to women navigating the coming out process.

Our first appointment or sometimes two are focused on getting clearer on what you’d like help with, determining what may be contributing to your concerns, and coming up with an individualized plan about how we’ll address this together. The rest of our sessions are focused on your goals using the approaches we discussed in the first couple of meetings, adjusting them as needed.
I take an active role with you in exploring and sorting out the impact of both current and past experiences on your life right now. I integrate our current knowledge about what’s effective with careful attention to what actually fits best for you and your situation. In addition to offering support and some concrete suggestions and help with problem-solving, I thoughtfully explore with you the deeper issues that are keeping you stuck in old problematic patterns so that they don’t keep recurring. We may explore your beliefs and behaviors or the information your body holds, which is typically the deepest way of knowing and attending to what’s needed.
In sessions, clients typically describe me as steady and warm and say I bring my real human self to the therapy.

Because people and life situations are varied and complex, there are no absolute guarantees about therapy outcomes.
However, therapy that is effective longterm involves a willingness to experience discomfort, both in our sessions and out in the rest of your life, in the service of moving towards the life you want. When you engage in that way, you can expect to find you’re increasingly acting more from your values and desires, more skillfully navigating the work and personal challenges in your life, and connecting more with others and yourself. The energy freed up from facing and working with these patterns can be used for what you want, rather than what you are trying to get away from.
-
I meet with clients weekly or every other week.
Consistency in attendance significantly improves your ability to benefit from therapy. Our natural tendency as human beings is to avoid and delay facing painful things. Regular meetings and a commitment to focus on your therapy goals between sessions supports you in facing what is causing you pain, in testing out new ways of thinking, feeling and acting, and with more quickly adjusting how you approach life. This can help you reduce you distress more effectively and often more quickly.
-
The length of therapy is dependent upon your goals. If you have been noticing patterns that have recurred for years, or in many parts of your life, you may find some initial, short-term relief after several sessions as we support you in your own experience and work through some of the surface parts of the issues. If you want lasting change, it will typically take a longer investment of time and attention.

I do not accept any health insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid or supplemental plans.
However, if you have health insurance that includes Out of Network (OON) benefit coverage, you may be eligible for some reimbursement from your insurer for our appointment. Please contact them to determine whether your individual plan offers that coverage. If so, I can provide you with a monthly Super Bill you may submit to them.

I see clients on Monday and Tuesday afternoons between 2 and 6 pm.

We meet either in my office in the Harmónia building at 406 N. Pinckney Street in the Mansion Hill District near Downtown Madison and the UW Campus or, if you are in Wisconsin during appointments, virtually on a secure video platform. Covid levels locally may impact the availability of in person meetings. There is on-street parking surrounding the building, nearby bus lines, and a bike rack outside the building.
